World Food Safety Day

“Food safety, everyone’s business”

On June 7, World Food Safety Day, the goal is to raise awareness and motivate action to help prevent, detect, and manage foodborne risks, thereby promoting food security, human health, economic prosperity, agriculture, market access, tourism, and long-term development. Access  to adequate amount of healthy food is essential for sustaining life and maintaining good health.

Unsafe food is a concern to human health and economies, disproportionately harming vulnerable and disadvantaged people, particularly women and children, conflict-affected populations, and migrants, with an estimated 600 million cases of foodborne diseases each year.

Every year, an estimated 420 000 people die around the world after eating contaminated food, with children under the age of 5 accounting for 40% of the foodborne disease burden, with 125 000 deaths per year.
