On Every 29th August National Sports Day is celebrated since 2012, which marks the birth anniversary of hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand who won the gold medal in the Olympics for India in 1928, 1932, and 1936. The primary goal of India's National Sports Day is to increase public understanding of the importance of sports and regular physical activity.

Who is Major Dhyan Chand?

Major Dhyan Chand is a legendary Indian hockey team player, also known as the “Hockey Wizard”. He was born on August 29, 1905. He was the captain of the Indian national hockey team.

In total, he managed to score about 400 international goals and almost 1,000 goals during the course of his career. Major Dhyan Chand received the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award, in 1956. 

Celebration of National Sports Day

The commemoration of National Sports Day highlights the overall significance of sports and motivates people to understand the necessity of participating in sports to maintain a healthy and active lifestyle. Each year it is hosted in the Rashtrapati Bhavana.

Notably, on this day, the government presents honours, including the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna, Arjuna, and Dronacharya Awards.

From 1928 to 1956, hockey was the most popular sport in India. During this time, India won six gold medals at the Olympics. Currently, there are millions of sports lovers in India distributed throughout numerous places.
